Heaven, hell, purgatory and the martyrdom of Saint Regula

A treasure of a special kind is the decoration scheme of the chapel of Kyburg Castle. The depiction of the Judgement Day represents Christ as the world’s judge.

Behind him heaven awaits, numerous souls proceed from purgatory to hell. The chapel was dedicated to Saint Regula, the patron saint of Zurich. The decoration programme was executed in the second half of the fifteenth century, shortly after Zurich had acquired Kyburg Castle. Saint Regula’s martyrdom is depicted in the side choir.
