The «Iron Maiden», a wooden cabinet with a metallic surface, is shown in the attic. Bought in 1876 by Matthäus Pfau somewhere in Kärnten, Austriia, she was installed in order to attract visitors to the castle. It was also intended to convey the «sombre mood of the Middle Ages».
In fact, the «Iron Maiden» was never used to torture nor to kill somebody at these times. She was invented in the 19th century, in order to furnish horrible «toture chambers» in castles around Europe, when they were no longer used for the investigation of crimes, but to horrify visitors.
