Kyburg Castle – a permanent building

About 800 years ago, the counts of Kyburg had a medieval stronghold built, which was to replace a

wooden refuge, still visible in its basic outline today. Around 1250, the castle consisted of the defence wall, the keep, the palas, the chapel and a further building. Over the next 800 years, building activity has continued uninterruptedly as well as renovation, improvement and restoration works. During the time of the Landvogts, the modest medieval castle was turned into a representative residence. The Landvogts enlarged windows and added improved stoves. More sophisticated flooring and wall coverings made the living rooms more comfortable.

The courtyard is surrounded by the keep, the southern rampart, the Ritterhaus, the western battlement,

the chapel and the economy buildings. At the courtyard’s centre lies the castle’s water supply. Until 1578, the maids fetched the water from the well, which is 15 metres deep, later the fountain supplied Kyburg Castle with water.
